Is it safe to swim in the Wellington region?

Toxic Algae

Is it Safe to Swim?

During summer, Wellington’s regional, city and district councils monitor the quality of water at popular beaches and rivers each week. Toxic algae is currently at very high levels in the Hutt River. There are a lot of floating algae mats in the river which are toxic if swallowed. Dogs are attracted by the musty smell and eat them. People could accidentally swallow while jumping in the water or swimming. We are recommending no swimming in the river, for people and dogs, and keep your dogs on leads around the river.
Our water quality in the region is usually very good, but there are a few things to keep in mind before you dunk your head under. Especially if you’re a dog!
