Taita Rock: Lower Hutt’s best kept swimming secret…

Taita Rock, in Taita North, is Lower Hutt’s best-kept swimming secret. My own children, their friends and neighbours knew all about it back in the 80’s and 90’s.

Kasha Isaia, 11, jumps into the Hutt River. The popular Taita swimming spot, known as Taita Rock, has been quieter than normal with the river closed due to toxic algae. At noon on Monday, about 30 local kids were swimming and jumping off the rock.
In hot weather it is arguably Lower Hutt’s best-kept secret.
For generations, children from Taita and Pomare (Taita North)  have been swimming in a pool in the Hutt River known as Taita Rock.
Each year ropes are attached to the side of the prominent rock on the riverbank and it becomes a popular swimming hole.
Tauu Isaia was the only person jumping off the highest spot.

In recent weeks it has been quieter than normal with warning signs reminding locals to stay out of the water due to toxic algae. The algae was potentially fatal to children and dogs.
The wet weather over Christmas flushed the river clear of algae and, with the warm weather of recent days, Taita Rock is again the place to be.
Tauu Isaia makes a big splash.
