Dunedin artists Daniel Mead and Tessa Petley work on a new mural on the old St George jam factory wall in London St, Dunedin, this week.
The graffiti and dirt has gone, replaced with a colourful mural after years of attempts.
Keep Dunedin Beautiful former co-ordinator Darlene Thomson said the organisation had tried for years to get the London St wall painted but faced hesitation from Mintaro Holdings Ltd, the owner of the property that backed on to the wall.
''It's a historical wall and the owner was worried a mural would detract from its history,'' she said.
But continuous graffiti and tagging over the years wore the owner down.
''Finally, he agreed as long as we maintained the historical part,'' Mrs Thomson said.
A mural design by Mr Mead did just that. It is based on original photos of the St George jam factory.
''The old wall was a real eyesore for a long time,'' Mr Mead said.
Now, the wall captures the old fresh fruit jam factory's past with images of fruit, employees and the building itself.
Mr Mead started painting the wall last month with help from artist Ms Petley, and expected the wall to be completed within the next couple of days.
