End of an era as Lancaster Park demolished

This contribution by Peter Petterson:
“It was on this day 138 years ago Lancaster Park opened. It started life as a potato paddock and then developed as a sports venue. It became one of the most famous rugby and cricket grounds in New Zealand along side Auckland’s Eden Park, Wellington’s Athletic Park and Dunedin’s Carisbrooke ( the latter two have also been replaced by other new stadiums.) Some famous games in New Zealand’s sporting history were played at Lancaster Park. A new stadium in the south end of Christchurch City has been planned and should be developed and constructed in the next few years. I had my own day of fame participating in an inter- secondary schools athletic meeting back in 1958 at Lancaster Park. My Shirley Boys High School junior 4 x 100 yard relay team finished third that year. Incidently, Shirley Boys High School was also destroyed in the 2011 earthquakes, and a new SBHS opened this year.”
